Jack and Linda Smiley

212 McKnight Street

Humboldt, TN

There was nothing special about 212 McKnight Street. A small wooden house with an old pickup parked in the dirt driveway.

A petite woman with long brown hair that needed attention answered the door after my first knock. She was wearing an apron over a simple blue cotton dress. I could hear kids crying in the background and the odor of dirty diapers made me backup when she opened the door!

“What do you want?” she asked in a very unpleasant tone.

“My name is Carson Reno, and I’m looking for Linda Smiley. Are you Linda?”

“No, I ain’t Linda and she ain’t here,” she snapped.

“Well, do you know where I might reach her?” I asked. “It’s important that I speak with her, it’s about her husband’s death.”

“You the insurance man? You got more money?” she said with excitement.

“No, I’m not an insurance man and I…..,”she interrupted me before I could finish.

“Then go away. I’m her sister and I don’t know where she is. She took that money and left me with these babies. She said there would be a man with more money in a day or two and I was to keep it for myself. So, if you ain’t that man with that money, just go away,” she replied in the same unpleasant tone.

“I’m sorry, but I have no idea what you are talking about,” I said.

She slammed the door in my face!

Now, that was just about the strangest conversation I have ever had! I got back in the Ford knowing less than I did when knocked on the door, if that was possible.

However, I was smart enough to know that no insurance had paid any death benefits, and I wasn't sure they had even put Harry Smiley in the ground yet! If somebody was delivering cash to 212 McKnight Street, it definitely wasn’t an insurance adjuster.

Before leaving town, I stopped back by the sheriff’s office and told the story to Scotty. I asked him to brief Leroy and I would call him later from Memphis. I never did.
